Entente Cordiale
   The name given by François guizot to the French-British rapproachment that was drafted during the July Monarchy, permitting France to end the diplomatic isolation that occurred after the revolution of 1830. This policy, which napoléon III tried to pursue also (the Franco-British alliance during the Crimean War, 1854-56), was for a long period impeded by the numerous rivalries, in particular the colonial, between the two countries. Meanwhile, faced with growing power in Germany, the French, who had already allied with Italy and Russia, approached Great Britain anew, a move facilitated by Ambassador paul cambon. The agreements, signed in April 1904, dealt with the various differences between the two countries; in compensation for giving up its rights in Egypt, France obtained rights to Morocco. These accords were strengthened during the Algeciras Conference (1906) and again with the Agadir crisis (1911). Thus at the outbreak of World War I (1914), France and Great Britain were closely allied against the Central Powers led by Germany.
